If your mailbox is anything like mine, this time of year it’s so impacted with requests for charitable donations that it needs a special kind of “mailbox enema” to release the jammed envelopes. Do you ever wonder how much of your charitable animal contributions actually serve the pets in need? Please let me introduce you to a LOCAL non-profit animal rescue organization that you may have never heard of and who won’t be filling your mailbox with address labels and calendars.
Animal Rescue and Care Fund is a Portland-based network of unpaid volunteers and foster homes that provides veterinary care, medication, food, shelter, and love to several dozen cats and kittens. When you think of a true shoestring-budget non-profit, ARCF should come to mind. Their only mailer is a quarterly newsletter, and their only marketing is a website. http://www.pdx-petadoption.org.
Despite the fact that they do not have a shelter to operate from–relying on local pet food boutiques and animal events to display adoptable cats–the group manages to provide exceptional veterinary care. In the past three years that I have been working with ARCF, they have managed to provide a level of intervention that includes medically necessary eye removals, breast cancer surgery, thyroid radiation treatment, significant dental extractions, panleukopenia (“distemper”) treatments, and hospitalization for extreme illnesses.
These rescued cats are often parcels of kittens found under homes, friendly strays, individual cats whose owners have age or health conditions that warrant their relinquishment, and abandoned cats left behind during house moves. Any cat that does not work out in a home is readily accepted back into the organization. This is a lifelong guarantee!
Available cat openings within the organization are limited because donations are limited and available foster homes are often full. If you are seeking a cat or a kitten to adopt, please look at ARCF’s website and call them. When you adopt from ARCF, you are not only adopting a cat that has usually had veterinary care directly from our own Cat Hospital vets (including reliable records), you are adopting from an organization that has limited space to accept newly abandoned cats.
Your donations are tax deductible and your money goes directly toward the immediate veterinary care and feeding of these homeless cats. There are no paid members of this organization, and no donations are wasted sending you free gifts in the mail. ARCF also accepts donations of unopened food, unopened treats, new toys, and cat litter.
You can also have Amazon.com donate to ARCF on your behalf AT NO COST TO YOU! Activating this step on your Amazon account takes literally one minute:
1. Open www.smile.amazon.com and use your regular Amazon account information to log in.
2. On the right side of the page, you will see a menu that asks you to choose a charity.
3. In the blank space provided, enter “Animal Rescue and Care.” You will ‘click’ their organization to select it. (You will also see that the charity is in Portland.)
4. Amazon will contribute 0.5% of the value of all your purchases to ARCF as long as your purchases are made through smile.amazon.com!
Please have a safe and meowy Holiday Season and never forget that the vets at Cat Hospital of Portland are here to help you with all of your furry feline needs!
