By the time a cat is one year old, he has aged to 24 human years. Imagine if you were 24 years old and had never been to a doctor or dentist. Among other things, you would never have been able to go to school because you had not been vaccinated. Unless you were very lucky the condition of your teeth would likely be poor. You might be fat if your mom didn’t know how to feed you properly when you were very young. Measles, chickenpox, and whooping cough would likely have made you quite ill.
Cats age much more rapidly than humans. Because they do, an annual examination by a veterinarian is the minimum care young cats should have. By the time they are 10, even healthy cats should be examined twice a year. While there are no scientific studies estimating cat age, a 10-year-old cat is about 56 human years old. As is true for humans that age, some general precautions are in order to stay healthy. Some of them even overlap like blood pressure measurements, regular wellness blood tests, and regular dental care.
Regular veterinary care means finding things early when they are both treatable and affordable. Regular veterinary care also means getting questions answered, getting problem solved, and having peace of mind. My cats, even though I see them everyday, are examined regularly at Cat Hospital of Portland. They are part of my family and deserve no less.
